VALLEY FALLS — George E. Shepard, 93, Valley Falls, died Friday, Nov. 13, 2020, at his residence. He was 93.

He was born July 8, 1927, in Carbondale, the son of Roy Shepard and Lois (Martindale) Shepard. He grew up in the Carbondale area. The family moved to Valley Falls, in 1960, where he continued farming.

George began his service to his country, Sept. 6, 1945, in the U.S. Army. During his service he earned the World War II Victory Medal and Asiatic Pacific Ribbon.

He married Charlene Reed Aug. 15, 1948, at E.U.B. Church, Richland. They shared 69 years of loving marriage until the death of Charlene in November 2017.

George was a dedicated and hardworking lifelong farmer. He was still farming up until his death. He loved farming and in his later years, he was able to travel with Charlene and his daughters.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers, LeRoy Shepard, Robert Shepard and Charles Shepard; four sisters, Lola Tryon, Mary Snell, Lilly Massek and Katherine (Leach) Shepard; a grandson, Todd S. Golder; and a daughter-in-law, Susie Shepard.

He is survived by six children, Nancy Shepard (Jerry Senne), Topeka, Larry Shepard (Sue), Valley Falls, Tom Shepard, Valley Falls, Michael Shepard (Dawn), Valley Falls, Becky Shepard, Topeka, and Sallie Meyer (Tom), Valley Falls; a sister, Margarette Piper, Carbondale; 17 grandchildren; and 31 great grandchildren.

To honor George’s life, funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, at Carbondale Community Church of Christian Fellowship, Carbondale. Interment will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Berryton. The Shepard family will greet friends for a visitation at 1 p.m. Wednesday prior to the service, at the church.
