CARBONDALE — Glen Eldon Combes, Carbondale, died Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2023, at his home. He was 85.

He was born March 19, 1937, in Lebo, to Walter C. and Ethel L. Combes. He graduated from Burlington High School in 1954, and joined the National Guard in October. He retired, with a rank of Chief Warrant Officer 5, in 1998, after 44 years of service.

Glen also put in 40 years at the Combined Support Maintenance Shop (CSMS) before retiring in 1996.

He married Ruby Mattox Oct. 9, 1955, in New Strawn. They had three children, Terry, Ricky and Bruce.

Glen loved to travel, camp and hunt. Above all, he loved spending time with his eight grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Ethel Combes; and two siblings, Marjorie Crouch and Dennis Combes.

Glen is survived by his wife, Ruby; his children, Terry Combes (Brenda), Ricky Combes and Bruce Combes (Lynette); three siblings, Keith Combes (Linda), Gordon Combes (Doris), and Ronnie Combes (Margaret); and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be noon Saturday, Feb. 4, at Jones Funeral Home, Burlington. Visitation will be 11 a.m. until service time. Burial will follow at Bowman and Adgate Cemetery, near Lebo in Coffey County.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Museum of the Kansas National Guard and sent in care of Jones Funeral Home, P.O. Box 277, Burlington, KS 66839.
