LEAVENWORTH — Louise Schmitendorf died Thursday, June 2, 2022, at St. John’s Hospital, Leavenworth. She was 92.
She was born Nov. 14, 1929, on the family farm south of Lyndon, near Olivet, the daughter of Ernest and Grace (Lumsden) White. She grew up near Olivet but spent most of her life in the Lyndon community, graduating from Lyndon High School in 1947. She had lived in Leavenworth for the last several years.
Louise was united in marriage to George Schmitendorf March 20, 1948, in Topeka. To this union five children were born, Francis, Yvonne, Jim, David and Larry.
She worked for Capper’s, Topeka, and then for Lyndon Schools in the cafeteria. While raising her family, she also did ironing work. She was indeed the best grandma, and always made the best cookies.
Louise was preceded in death by her husband, George, Jan. 1, 2009; son, David Schmitendorf, May 27, 2022; a niece raised as a daughter, Lucille Speed; parents, Ernest and Grace; brother, Don White; and sister, Sarah White.
She is survived by four children, Francis Schmitendorf (Patty), Leavenworth, Yvonne Beets (Jim), Olathe, Jim Schmitendorf (Teresa), Lyndon, and Larry Schmitendorf (Anita), Basehor; daughter-in-law, Paula Schmitendorf, Emporia; 15 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 7, at Feltner Funeral Chapel, Lyndon. Burial followed at the Lyndon Cemetery.
