PEORIA, Ill. — Don Ruby, formerly of Osage City, died Oct. 31, 2021, at an assisted living home in Peoria, Ill. He was 67.
He was born Aug. 28, 1954, the son of Paul and Carol (Bolten) Ruby. He grew up on a farm west of Osage City, and graduated from Osage City High School in 1972.
After graduation, Don went to North Dakota to work for his older brother in the bee business, Ruby Apiaries. Following a long recovery after a car-train accident, Don lived with some permanent disabilities in his own home in Fergus Falls, Minn. Don spent most of his life there working, fishing, gardening and enjoying the outdoors. In his later years, he really had fun playing cards at the local bars. He also rang the bell for the Salvation Army more than anyone else in town. He never let his physical limitations stop him from helping others or enjoying all that he did. He was a very kind man and never had a mean intent in his heart.
On Aug. 5, 1989, Don was united in marriage to Chantana Pongwisooti. They later divorced. To this union, one son was born, Kevin, who was a real treasurer in Don’s heart. Many years later, Don married Julene Rameriez. After a number of years, they also divorced.
In 2017, Don decided to move to the Chicago area to live with his son. A year later, he moved into an assisted living home in Peoria, Ill. He made many friends there, enjoying the time that was spent playing games and sharing life. He will sadly be missed by many, especially his son, who says he is the person he is today because of his dad.
Don was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his son, Kevin Ruby, Colorado Springs, Colo.; two brothers, Dick Ruby (Donna), Milnor, N.D., and Greg Ruby (Nancy), Osage City; a brother-in-law, Andy Saelao, Chicago, who was also a good friend; and numerous other relatives and friends.
Cremation has taken place, and a graveside service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, May 28, at the Burlingame Cemetery.
