CARBONDALE — Mary Ann Adkins, 82, Carbondale, died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2022.
She was born July 18, 1939, in McDonald County, Mo., the daughter of Walter Franklin Mayfield and Ollie Lavern (Williams) Mayfield. She graduated from Topeka High School.
Mary was the dietary manager at Colmery O’Neil VA Hospital, Topeka, for 16 years, retiring in 2004. She was a member of Eastern Star, Fidelity Chapter, Carbondale, and the V.F.W. Women’s Auxiliary, formerly Post #2709.
She married Jack Counts; they later divorced. On June 18, 1968, she married Virgil Dean Adkins in Bernice, Okla. He preceded her in death on March 19, 2005.
Mary enjoyed sewing, crafting and crocheting. She also enjoyed gardening and canning, as well as camping and fishing. Her most enjoyable time was spent with her family, always attending every gathering and event.
She was also preceded in death by her parents and two grandchildren, Dena Longstaff Nottestead and Jesse Boyer.
Mary is survived by her children, Charleen Tyson (Dale), Frances Deters (Carl), Jack Mayfield, Connie Bickford (Steve), Barbara Murray, Marlene Jordan (Dick), and Susie Longstaff; 15 grandchildren, Travis Brown, Dillon Brown, Jimmy Frye, RJ Frye, Brad Boyer, Amanda Headlee, Andrea Mayfield, Jeremy Mayfield, Diana Neal, Elizabeth Eich, John Miller, Schmicka Murray, Tracy Lewis, Dena and Jacob; 28 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and five sisters.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2022, at Dove Cremations & Funerals Southeast Chapel, 2843 S.E. Minnesota Avenue, Topeka. Interment will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Berryton. Mary’s family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 31, at the funeral home.
