MELVERN — Jules Reece Malain, Melvern, died from COVID-19 complications Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2020. He was 71.

Jules was born Jan. 15, 1949, in Vancouver, Wash., the son of Arthur Leo Malain and Fanny Isobel Bloom. Jules co-owned and operated Kathy’s Kitchen with his wife, Kathy Young, in Melvern. Jules was a brilliant mechanic, plumber, electrician, chef, musician and inventor.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and a sister.

Jules is survived by his wife, Kathy, Melvern; two sisters, Fannie Toner, Milwaukie, Ore., and Melissa Malain, Western New York; two daughters, April Renee Clifton, Jamestown, N.Y., and Amy Lee Tudor, Kane, Penn.; six stepchildren, Ty and Marcie Frederickson, Overbrook, Justin and Brooke Hamilton, Tenino, Wash., Janell Carter, Emporia, and Miranda Hamilton, Topeka; five grandchildren; and eight step-grandchildren.

Jules was well loved by his community and family. He had friends all over the world and the food, music, and ideas he shared with them, as well as the relentless generosity he extended to others, were among his greatest joys. He will be missed tremendously, yet those closest to him also understand that the time spent together and the laughs shared will resonate for years. Though 71, by his own admission, he had “so much more to accomplish,” and his diligent work ethic and unwavering passion for learning will be carried forward by the rest of us.
