OVERBROOK — Margaret Karen Fischer, Scranton, died Friday, Aug. 14, 2020, at Brookside Retirement Community, Overbrook. She was 83.
She was born June 4, 1937, at Halls Summit, the daughter of Walter and Margaret Northcott. She graduated from Waverly High School in 1955 and went straight to work in Topeka.
She and Gerald were high school sweethearts and dated since ninth grade. They were married Aug. 11, 1957. He survives.
She worked in Emporia as Gerald went through Emporia Teacher’s College. She was a stay at home mom for many years and then began her long career as secretary at Scranton Grade School. She worked there for 27 years until she retired in 2000. She loved everyone who came through the doors.
She was a member of Osage City Church of Christ and spent many years teaching Bible classes, going to church camp and faithfully serving the Lord, whom she loved so much. She dedicated a great deal of time to Relay for Life and she enjoyed working on the election board.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Margaret; her stepfather, Stanley Calvert; a brother; two sisters; and a granddaughter, Rachel Kae.
Besides her husband of 63 years, she is survive by their children, Greg Fischer and wife, Jeri, Valley Falls, Lisa Green and husband, Jon, Lyndon, and Lori Whaley and husband, Scott, Oskaloosa; her greatest joys was her grandchildren, Roger (Kim) and Scott (Sasha) Fischer, Nina, Jonathon and Robert Green and Zach and Aaron Whaley; six great-grandchildren, Sebastian, Tristan, Ariana, Isabella, Sofia and Presley; and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express sincere appreciation to Brookside Retirement Community for the excellent care that Karen received. The staff there truly became family over the past five years.
Visitation will be 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18 and funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 19, both at Feltner Funeral Home, Lyndon. Cremation will follow services and private family inurnment will be held at a later date. If you plan on attending the visitation or service, please bring a facemask.
