SCRANTON — Debra J. Schlagel, Scranton, died Monday, Feb. 17, 2020. She was 65.

She was born June 12, 1954, in Sandpoint, Idaho, the daughter of Ramon and Virginia Allen Wirzfeld. Growing up, the family traveled a lot as an Air Force family. It instilled a love of travel in her.

She received her LPN in 1974, became a registered nurse in 1981 and has most recently been a nurse with the V.A.

She had a love for the beach, especially Sanibel Island, Fla. She had a creative spirit and loved colorful things. Almost every weekend she would be busy with family, whether it was an estate sale, festivals or antique stores.

Debra married Robert Schlagel, March 26, 1983. He preceded her in death on Dec. 2, 2006.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by a daughter, Samantha Carothers and husband, Tyler; a son, William Schlagel; two sisters, Denise Bahner and husband, Del and Diana Cross and husband, Jeff; and a brother, Michael Wirzfeld and wife, Loretta.

The family will greet friends during a visitation 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 21, at Penwell-Gabel, 1321 S.W. 10th Ave., Topeka.

A Celebration of Life will be 10 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 22, at the Penwell-Gabel. Interment will follow at Overbrook Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Santa Fe Trail School District in memory of Debra J. Schlagel to help pay student lunch debts.
