OSAGE CITY – Betty Jean Woodward died Thursday, Aug. 1, 2024, at Osage Nursing Center, Osage City. She was 88.

She was born Sept. 2, 1935, in Burlingame, the daughter of George and Hazel (Howe) Fry. She grew up in Burlingame, living there until she was 18. Then she lived in Vassar for 50 years, and later lived in Emporia, Overbrook and Osage City.

Betty was united in marriage to Harold Woodward Jr. Dec. 22, 1952, in Burlingame. To this union three children were born, Cassandra, Jane and David.

She worked as a linotype operator for the Journal Free Press, Osage City, and then for the State of Kansas Department of Administration as an accountant for 25 years. She was a member of the Vassar United Methodist Church and the Red Hat Society, and had volunteered at Stormont-Vail and Newman hospitals.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Harold, on Feb. 9, 2005; her parents, George and Hazel; a son-in-law, Fred Sweetwood; her brother, John Fry; a brother-in-law, George Ohlson; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

She is survived by her three children, David Woodward, Osage City, Cassandra Sweetwood, Quenemo, and Jane Smith (Joe), Vassar; her two sisters, Helen Ohlson, Wichita, and Linda Schutter (Dean), Topeka; her sister-in-law, Charlene Fry, Topeka; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Aug. 8 at Feltner Funeral Chapel, Lyndon. Burial will be in the Vassar Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Betty Woodward Memorial Fund, and sent in care of Feltner Funeral Home, 818 Topeka Ave., Lyndon, KS 66451.
