OLATHE — William John “Bill” Miles, La Cygne, died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2022, at Olathe Medical Center, Olathe. He was 69.

He was born Feb. 2, 1953, in Emporia, the son of Francis Marion and Gladys Irene (Hawkins) Miles. He attended K-12 at Osage City schools and graduated from Osage City High School with the Class of 1971. Following graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy on active duty, and then continued to serve his country as a member of the Naval Reserve.

Bill married his sweetheart, Jan, Oct. 28, 2000, in Burlington.

He was a hard worker. Even after retirement, he continued to work part time for Peoples Services LLC, La Cygne, as a fiber optic phone technician, while also working part time for the La Cygne Lake Marina. He loved to fish for anything that swam, and he also enjoyed metal detecting and camping.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Francis Marion Miles (Feb. 13, 1979) and Gladys Irene Holz (Dec. 3, 1999); a brother, Gerald Hayden Miles (May 1994); a sister, Linda Miles Smitha Sisney (2017); and a nephew, Marc Smitha (1985).

He is survived by his wife, Jan, of the home; two daughters, Monica Decker (Jarrod) and their children, Jordan, Dillon, Drue and Abbey, and Jennifer Miles; a stepdaughter, Angela Compton-Wright, and her three daughters; a stepson, Brandon Compton, and his daughter and son; a sister-in-law, Elaine Miles; a brother-in-law, Dale Smitha; three nieces, Michelle Miles Kessell, Sherrie Miles Hert Schamp, and Erin Smitha Thornton; and two nephews, Scott Smitha and Chad Smitha.

Memorial services will be held at a later date, when he will be laid to rest in the Osage City Cemetery, Osage City.
