Jim Masters

Feb. 6, 1949-March 27, 2021

COUNCIL GROVE – Jimmie “Jim” Masters, Council Grove, died with his family at his side Saturday, March 27, 2021, at his home. He was 72.

He was born Feb. 6, 1949, in Burlingame, the son of Marshall “Short” Masters and Georgia (Patterson) Masters.

He married Sheryl Gunterman in 1967. They later divorced.

On Dec. 5, 1975, Jim was united in marriage to Janice (Christiason) Venable at the Morris County Courthouse in Council Grove. They celebrated their 45th year of marriage this past year.

Jim worked several jobs in his early days, but worked for the City of Council Grove water department for 37 years, working his way up to Water Superintendent. He loved his job and the people he worked with. Jim retired in 2011 and he and his friend, Jim Evans started a backhoe service which they ran together until 2016 when health reasons caused Jim to sell his half of the business to Mr. Evans. He still helped out occasionally to keep active.

Jim enjoyed fishing and hunting, but he truly loved his time in the Mountains of Colorado with family and friends. He also loved his years that he and Janice were snowbirds and would winter in Coolidge, Ariz., at Hohokam Mobile Village.

Jim was an active member of the Masonic Lodge No. 357, Alta Vista.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Barbara Book; two brothers, Richard Lloyd Masters and Larry Masters; a grandson, Christopher Masters; and a granddaughter, Allison Masters.

He is survived by his wife, Janice; three sons, David Venable (Peggy), Houston, Texas, James Masters (Shyanne), Wilsey, and Calvin Masters (Mandy), Topeka; two daughters, Marcie Quaney (Rob), Burlingame, and Angel Cobb (Shane), Topeka; 18 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, April 1, 2021, at Federated Church of Burlingame. Interment will follow at Sunny Slope Cemetery, Council Grove. The service will be live streamed on Lamb-Roberts-Price Funeral Home Facebook page for friends unable to attend. The family met with friends for a visitation 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 31, at Lamb-Roberts-Price Funeral Home, 503 S. Topeka Ave., Burlingame. The family requests casual attire to all services.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society Melanoma Research, sent c/o Lamb-Roberts-Price Funeral Home, P.O. Box 194 Burlingame, KS 66413. Condolences may be e-mailed to the family through www.lamb-roberts.com.
