OSAGE CITY — Bessie B. McFarlane, Burlingame, died Saturday, June 13, 2020, at Vintage Park, Osage City, surrounded by family. She was 87.

Bessie was born Aug. 10, 1932, in Harveyville, on her favorite story telling place, Buttermilk Lane, the daughter of Ray G. and Ora Lila (Wyrick) Meyers. She attended grade school in Harveyville, and then moved to Burlingame. She spent most of her life in Burlingame. Bessie graduated from Burlingame High School with the class 1950.

She worked for Blue Cross and Blue Shield, in Topeka, was a homemaker, worked at Patterson’s Hy-Klas. Joe and Bessie owned and operated J-B Swap and Shop, and was a donut maker at Casey’s, all in Burlingame. She also worked at Dollar General, in Osage City, in her retirement years. She was a member of the Burlingame Federated Church, VFW and Eastern Star.

She married Joseph W. McFarlane Sept. 14, 1951, at Burlingame Federated Church. He preceded her in death on Sept. 15, 2010.

Besides her husband of 58 years, she was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Jeffrey M. McFarlane March 14, 2014; three sisters, Ora Jackson, Dorothy Dorr and Evelyn Moon; and a great-grandchild, Kaysein Harris.

Bessie is survived by two daughters, Kathy Poe (Duane), Harveyville, and Cindy Harris (Kevin), Burlingame; a daughter-in-law, Pam McFarlane, Burlingame; eight grandchildren, Josey (Christina) McFarlane, Jacob (Katie) McFarlane, Kelsie (Brad) Kooser, Molly (Dwayne) Wall, Noel Poe, Andy (Bree) Harris, Daniel (Erin) Harris and Kyle Harris; 17 great-grandchildren, McKenna, Madison, Morgan, Moxie and Jameson McFarlane, Justice, Preslee and Ryker McFarlane, Braxton, Jeffrey Decker, Collins and Kane Kooser and Paighten, Karter and Burke Harris and Lexie and Emery. She holds a special place in her heart for two other grandchildren, Derrick and Shayla.

Funeral services will be 11:30 a.m. Thursday, June 18, at Burlingame Federated Church. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 17, at the church. Burial will be at Burlingame Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made payable to the Jeff McFarlane Memorial Scholarship Fund or Burlingame Federated Church and/or Church Food Pantry, and sent in care of Feltner Funeral Home, 818 Topeka Ave., Lyndon, KS 66451.
