Indians bring home FHL championship

EMPORIA—The Osage City Indians completed a clean sweep of their league with a 61-52 win over West Franklin in the Flint Hills League Tournament championship game Saturday at White Auditorium in Emporia.

“We did alright,” said Osage City coach Dennis Fort. “It was good for us to have games we didn’t beat someone by 20. We had to step up, rebound and execute. If we wouldn’t have done that, we wouldn’t have won.”

The Indians cruised in the first round, beating Chase County 76-39 before a tougher test with Lyndon in the semifinals.

The Tigers took an early lead, edging Osage City 13-10 in the first quarter and 26-25 at the half. The Indians turned the tide on a 15-6 run in the fourth quarter and went on to win 55-46.

Duncan Fort led Osage City with 20 points, despite going 2 for 7 at the free throw line. Ryan Haskins had 17 points, including 3 threes.

“Lyndon stepped up and played us pretty good,” Fort said. “I was impressed with how hard their kids played. They’d vastly improved in that short period of time.”

In the championship, the Indians outpaced the Falcons by a basket in each quarter, edging West Franklin 21-19 in the final frame to win 61-52. Duncan Fort led the Indians with 26 points; Ryan Haskins has 12 points.

“Both of those teams stepped up and improved a lot,” Fort said.

With the win, Fort immediately turns to the final seven games of the regular season.

“As we get through these next games, we need as many tough games as we can get,” Fort said. “We’re going to have tight games when we go to sub-state, and if we make it to state.”

The Indians (12-1) will host Santa Fe Trail for their Queen of Courts evening, with games beginning at 4:45 p.m. Friday. Crowning will be at halftime of the boys’ basketball game. They also look forward to tough matches with Wamego, Olpe, Silver Lake and Rossville over the coming weeks, preparing for close games and tight finishes.

“There’s no way to cover every possible situation late in the game,” Fort said. “We’re working on stuff like that in practice, but until some other opponent is trying to do that to you, it’s not the same.

The Lyndon Tigers also had a strong tournament, taking their only loss from the Indians as they finished third in the tournament. The Tigers shook off three straight losses prior to the tournament to go 2-1 with a 64-48 win over Council Grove Saturday in the third-place game.

Lyndon took an early lead over the Braves in a 20-10 first quarter. The Tigers extended their lead to more than 20 points in the third quarter, and went on to win by 16.

Shaugn Reed led the Tigers with 18 points, including 4 threes; Ryan Herdman and Nick Ratzloff had 17 points.

Reed and Herdman led Lyndon’s effort with 12 points apiece against Osage City in the semifinals; Dawson Swinehart had 10 points.

The fourth-seeded Tigers rolled in the first round, beating Northern Heights 50-34. Ryan Herdman and Shaugn Reed each had 13 points; Nick Ratzloff had 10.

The Tigers (8-4) will play Friday at Mission Valley, and will host Wabaunsee for Academic Night with games beginning at 4:45 p.m. Feb. 3.
