TOPEKA—Gary Jernigan, Lyndon, died Dec. 28, 2013, at a Topeka hospital. He was 75.
He was born June 27, 1938, at Topeka, the only child of Orville and Pearle Jones Jernigan. He grew up north of Dragoon Creek north of Lyndon. He had lived in Atlanta, Ga., Topeka, and then returned to Lyndon.
He graduated from Osage City High School in 1956. He attended Emporia State University where he received a bachelor’s degree in music education in 1960, and his master’s degree in music in 1961.
He taught at Brown High School, Atlanta, Ga. for five years, then at Highland Park Junior High School, Topeka, for 10 years. He also farmed with his father near Lyndon for many years. He had been a member of United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his father, Orville, on Nov. 11, 1988, and his mother, Pearle, on Oct. 14, 1989.
He is survived by several cousins and other family.
Funeral services will be 10:30am Jan. 3 at Feltner Funeral Home, Lyndon. Burial will follow at Arvonia Cemetery. He will lie in state from 5-6:30 p.m. Jan. 2 at the funeral home.
