OVERBROOK — Eldon W. Mounkes, Lyndon, died Saturday, Jan. 16, 2021, at Brookside Retirement Community, Overbrook. He was 89.

He was born Oct. 5, 1931, in Bushong, the son of Elisha and Hattie (McKinley) Mounkes. Eldon graduated from Olivet High School in 1950 and served in the U.S. Navy from 1951 to 1955, and was involved in Operation Castle, hydrogen bomb test at Eniwetok.

He farmed with his father and then farmed on his own. Eldon worked for the Kansas Department of Transportation until his retirement.

He was a member of the Lyndon American Legion Post 125 and Olivet United Methodist Church. Eldon always enjoyed outings with his dog, Grizzly.

Eldon married his high school sweetheart, Donnalee Gilman Dec. 14, 1952, in Olivet. She survives. To this union, three children were born, Steve, Annetta and Tammi.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Elisha and Hattie; a brother, Alphus Mounkes; and a grandson, Alec Mounkes.

Besides his wife of 68 years, he is survived by three children, Steve Mounkes, Lyndon, Annetta (Danny) Hurt, Lyndon, and Tammi (Dave) Thornburgh, Osage City; eight grandchildren, Mara Mounkes, Tonia Lange, Tanae Olson, Tanille Boswell, Chelsi Gardner, Blake Thornburgh and Brock Thornburgh; 10 great-grandchildren, Tigean, Keldon, Bryleigh, Addyson, Korbyn, Levi, Camden, Natalee, Tenley and Jarett; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 21 at Feltner Funeral Chapel, Lyndon. Burial will follow at Lyndon Cemetery. Eldon will lie in state 4 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel and the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
