Dale Melvin Davies

READING — Dale Melvin Davies died Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2019, at his home in Reading. He was 93.

He was born Nov. 24, 1925, at Emporia, the son of Jacob Charles and Olive Jernigan Davies. He began attending Reading United Methodist Church as a child and continued throughout his life. He attended Reading High School and graduated with the class of 1943.

Ruth Anderson

Jan. 12, 1925 – Aug. 20, 2019

TOPEKA — Ruth Anderson, Overbrook, died Aug. 20, 2019, at Midland Hospice House, Topeka. She was 94.

She was born Jan. 12, 1925, at Exeter, Calf., the daughter of Miles Daniel Durkee and Percie Jane Severn Durkee. Her mother died just three months after Ruth was born. She grew up living with various relatives in Nebraska and Iowa as well as attending a boarding school in Gravette, Ark.

David W. Wilson

Nov. 1, 1955 – Aug. 17, 2019

LYNDON — David W. Wilson departed this life Aug. 17, 2019, at his home in Lyndon. He was 63.

He was born Nov. 1, 1955, at Ottawa, the son of Robert K. and Betty J. Peterson Wilson. He lived in Ottawa for nearly 30 years before moving to Lyndon in 1982.

Chip and seal

Chip seal work starts Aug. 15 in Osage County

Chip seal work on three highways in Osage County will begin on Thursday, Aug. 15, weather permitting, according to the Kansas Department of Transportation.

Work will start on a one-mile stretch of K-276 from Olivet to the ramps on U.S. 75 as well as on a stretch of K-278 from U.S. 75 west three miles. Then, will take place on U.S. 75 from just south of K-278 and extend north five miles to the K-68 junction.

Kathryn "Kathy" Coffman

April 12, 1958 – Aug. 12, 2019

TOPEKA — Kathryn "Kathy" Coffman, Overbrook, died Monday, Aug. 12, 2019, at Midland Hospice House, Topeka. She was 61.

She was born April 12, 1958, at Wichita, the daughter of Rex and Leona Orindgreff. She grew up in Melvern, lived in Osage City, and has been in Overbrook for over 30 years.

She was an insurance agent for many years in Osage City and Overbrook. She was co-owner of Scranton Tavern for the last several years.

Robert “Bob” Martin Stockman

April 28, 1926 – July 28, 2019

LYNDON — Robert “Bob” Martin Stockman, Lyndon, left this world to join his Lord Jesus Christ, July 28, 2019, at his home. He was 93.

He was born April 28, 1926, at his parent’s home in Sandy Hook, near St. Marys. He was the second of 13 children born to Francis Peter “F.P.” and Martha Boelens Stockman. He grew up on the family farm in Sandy Hook, where he attended country-school in a one-room schoolhouse.

Franklin Jay Stokes

Jan. 24, 1959 – Aug. 6, 2019

TOPEKA — Franklin Jay Stokes, Scranton, died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2019 in Topeka. He was 60.

He known as Frankie and was born Jan. 24, 1959, at Topeka, the son of Bill and Kathleen Stokes. He grew up in multiple towns across the state of Kansas, and settled in Scranton.

He was the oldest of three boys and graduated from Santa Fe Trail in 1977. A short time after graduating high school he bought his first semi and started his lifelong career of an over the road trucker.

Wilma Schwemmer

Oct. 27, 1922 – Aug. 8, 2019

OVERBROOK — Wilma Schwemmer, Lyndon, died Thursday, Aug. 8, 2019, at Brookside Retirement Community, Overbrook. She was 96.

She was born Oct. 27, 1922, Lawrence, the daughter of W.C. and Lydia Hildenbrand Wulfkuhle. She lived in Stull for many years before moving to rural Lyndon in 1969.
