Carbondale man receives probation for sex crimes against a child

ALMA — A Carbondale man was granted 36 months on probation after pleading no contest to two counts of sex crimes against a child under 14 years old in Wabaunsee County.

Richard Dean Calderwood was sentenced Tuesday in connection with two counts of aggravated indecent solicitation of a child. Calderwood’s complete birth date wasn’t listed on court records, although they indicate he was born in 1963.

Documents obtained from Wabaunsee County District Court list Judge Gary Nafziger as the sentencing judge.

Chargers send seven wrestlers to state

CARBONDALE — The Chargers wrapped up a trio of home wrestling events with a third-place team finish in the Class 4A Regional Wrestling Tournament Feb. 17-18 at Santa Fe Trail High School.

“This was the third week in a row of hosting big events, and it was a good one,” said Regan Erickson, Chargers head coach. “Overall, we wrestled pretty well. Getting seven wrestlers in the top three, with us going seven for seven in the final round, is a great way to finish.”

The Chargers won four championship matches and three third-place matches to place third overall.

Hensley: Tax plan a step in the right direction

TOPEKA — While I believe the tax plan offered by Senate Democrats was more structurally sound, the next best option passed last week with bi-partisan support. Since it was not amended, the tax plan goes to the governor's desk. The question is whether he will veto it or let it go into law without his signature.

I voted for this tax plan because I believe it is the first step in ending the governor's reckless policies and putting Kansas on the long road back to fiscal responsibility.
