Burlingame girls earn all-star win

HIGHLAND—Two members of the Burlingame High School Lady Bearcats’ volleyball team participated in the Highland College all-star volleyball game Saturday, in Highland.

Burlingame seniors Ashton Dorr and Hayley Lewis played for the Navy team, coached by Burlingame High School Head Coach Chelsi Gardner. The Navy team lost the first match 29-27, but beat the gold team 25-22 and 28-26 in the remaining matches to win 2-1.

Carnival, roundup planned at MdCV Elementary

Marais des Cygnes Valley Elementary School, Quenemo, will host its school carnival 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 12. Activities planned for the carnival will include dunk tank, inflatables, concession stand, carnival games, silent auction and a raffle. Money raised will be used to support the reading and math programs.

A kindergarten roundup is scheduled for 9-10 a.m. April 25.

Parents should bring students’ immunization records, Social Security number, birth certificate and health assessment to the roundup.

Harris enters non-guilty plea, trial set for June

LYNDON—Defendant James P. Harris entered a “not guilty” plea at his arraignment March 31 in Osage County District Court. Harris is charged with first-degree murder in the death of James Gerety.

Chief Judge Phillip M. Fromme accepted the plea and set a date for trial, beginning at 8:30 a.m. June 23. Fromme asked if one week would be sufficient for trial duration, noting that the state had a witness list with 30 names included.

State parks to host open houses

Osage County’s state parks will host open houses 9 a.m.-3 p.m. March 29, with free entrance to the parks for all attendees.

Activities at Pomona State Park will include tours of new cabins, RV show, door prizes, scavenger hunt, Easter egg hunt, demonstrations and food vendors. The date is the last day to purchase park permits at the discounted price and learn about the new park passport program. Pomona State Park is located at 22900 S. Hwy. 368, Vassar. Fair board announces plans to replace arena

OVERBROOK—The Overbrook Fair Board set dates for the Overbrook Fair Aug. 13-16, securing a carnival and unveiling plans for remodeling the arena at its monthly meeting March 19 at Conrad’s Bar and Grill, in Overbrook.

The board confirmed Jones and Company Carnival as the provider of amusement rides Aug. 14-16. The board also addressed concerns about the overlap of the first days of school and the fair.

Organizations to plant more trees in Burlingame parks

BURLINGAME—An initiative to secure more shaded area in the recreation commission ballpark complex was introduced by council member and Burlingame Tree Board Member Carolyn Strohm during the March 17 council meeting. Strohm summarized a recent meeting between members of the tree board and USD 454 school district.

“We talked with the school to get comments, if they would like to see more trees planted around the ball parks for shade,” Strohm said. “For a couple of weeks, we’re going to put collection boxes in classrooms and have a contest among the classes.”

Bridges less critical than anticipated

LYNDON—County commissioners reviewed bridges on the fracture-critical list with Glen Tyson and Jason Crawford of the Osage County Road and Bridge Department. The department and commissioners shared input and recommendations on several bridges on the list.

“I hear you had some condemned last week,” said Carl Anderson, commissioner.

“Yes, I’ll fill you in on that” said Tyson.
