Robert E. Coon

Feb. 5, 1935 – Sept. 5, 2014

OSAGE CITY—Robert E. Coon, Osage City, formerly of Ottawa, died Sept. 5, 2014, at Osage Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was 79.

He was born Feb. 5, 1935, at Williamsburg, the son of Hough and Florence McMillian Coon. He was a near lifelong resident of Ottawa, moving from Williamsburg when he was 6 years old. In 2007, he moved to Osage City.

He worked for Willis Nursery, Ottawa, for many years, retiring as a nurseryman.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Alice Whitmer and Ethel Hull.

Alice Roberta Peterson

Nov. 7, 1948 – Sept. 5, 2014

CARBONDALE—Alice Roberta Peterson, Carbondale, died Sept. 5, 2014, at her mother’s home surrounded by family. She was 65.

She was born Nov. 7, 1948, at Herington, the daughter of Robert D. and Alice Massey Morris. She attended Topeka schools. She was a member of the Meriden United Methodist Church.

She married Fred Bradshaw in 1965. To this union, four children were born. They later divorced. She married Randy Peterson in 1986, and later divorced.

N. Linda Devin

Dec. 12, 1957 – Sept. 1, 2014

OLATHE—N. Linda Devin, Lyndon, died Sept. 1, 2014, at Olathe Medical Center. She was 56.

She was born Dec. 12, 1957, at Ottawa, the daughter of Bron and Vivian Watts Devin. She grew up in Pomona and had lived in Lyndon for the last 15 years.

She graduated from Pomona High School and Baker Nursing School. She worked at Green Acres Restaurant for many years and managed the Ottawa Country Club for six years.

She married Richard Williams. He survives of the home.

Vanessa Owens-Waller

July 16, 1969 – Aug. 31, 2014

OSAGE CITY—Vanessa Owens-Waller, Osage City, died Aug. 31, 2014 after a battle with cancer. She was 45.

She was born July 16, 1969, at Chanute, the daughter of George Bearden and Verna Owens. She attended Chanute High School.

She married Jeremy Waller in 1995. He survives.

She was a homemaker and devoted wife and mother. She loved spending time with her family. Her beautiful smile and warm heart will be missed.

She was preceded in death by her father; a sister, Regina Brooks; and a brother, Todd Owens.

L.D. Crumb

Aug. 29, 2014

WAVERLY—L.D. Crumb, Waverly, died August 29, 2014, at the Sunset Manor Nursing Home, in Waverly. He was 77.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Sept. 3 at Shelter House, Waverly Cemetery. There will be no visitation.

Isabelle Irene Bruce

Sept. 13, 1926 ¬– Aug. 29, 2014

OSAGE CITY—Isabelle Irene Bruce died Aug. 29, 2014, at Peterson Nursing Home, Osage City. She was 87.

She was born Sept. 13, 1926, at Burlington, the daughter of William and Pearl Irene McGhann Germann. She was a graduate of New Strawn High School.

She married Woodrow “Woody” Bruce Oct. 12, 1946, at Cottonwood Falls. He preceded her in death on Sept. 3, 1968.

She was a switchboard operator for Southwestern Bell for over 50 years until her retirement in the mid 1980’s.

William Kenneth Verna

Feb. 8, 1928 – Aug. 28, 2014

TOPEKA—William Kenneth “Sonny” Verna, Topeka, died Aug. 28, 2014 at his home. He was 86.

He was born Feb. 8, 1928, at Topeka, the son of Alexander and Isabelle Curley Verna. He served in The U.S. Marine Corps from February 1946 to November 1947 and also served in the U.S. Army from April 1950, retiring as a Sergeant First Class in April 1969. During his military career, he served in China, three tours in Germany and during the Korean Conflict. He retired from the Santa Fe Railroad in 1986.

Mary Elaine Jones

Oct. 20, 1936 – Aug. 16, 2014

KANSA CITY—Mary Elaine Tucker Jones, Overland Park, peacefully passed away Aug. 16, 2014, at Kansas City Hospice House. She was 77.

She was born Oct. 20, 1936, at Barclay, the daughter of Kenneth M. and Mary Helen Sims Tucker.

She was raised in Osage City, and graduated from Osage City High School. She also lived and worked in Topeka and Leavenworth.

She married Warren R. Johnson April 29, 1958, at Osage City, and then Jerald E. Jones May 22, 1970, at Leavenworth. They preceded her in death.

Sophanna M. “Sophie” Ogliaro

July 16, 1929 – Aug. 16, 2014

OSAGE CITY—Sophanna M. “Sophie” Ogliaro died Aug. 16, 2014, at her residence in Osage City. She was 85.

Sophanna Marie Wilson was born July 16, 1929, at San Antonio, Texas, the daughter of Walter and Bertha Durand Wilson. She graduated high school in Springdale, Ark. She moved to Osage City in 1950.

She worked as an assistant city clerk for Osage City for 40 years until her retirement in 1990.

She married Joseph “Bud” Ogliaro June 20, 1963, Osage City. He preceded her in death on May 25, 2004.

Virgil Eugene McPherson

April 11, 1932 – Aug. 16, 2014

GRANTVILLE—Virgil Eugene McPherson Sr., of the Grantville community, died Aug. 16, 2014, at his home. He was 82.

He was born April 11, 1932, the son of Wallace and Reland Pfost McPherson, at Tecumseh. He moved to Carbondale as a young child.

He attended Carbondale schools and was a member of the 1951 state championship basketball team. After graduating from Carbondale High School, he served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955, and was stationed in Germany. He also served in the U.S. Army Reserves from 1955 to 1961.
