Don Ray Faust

May 10, 1937 – Nov. 12, 2017

OVERBROOK — Don Ray Faust, Overbrook, died after a struggle with COPD, Sunday, November 12, 2017, with his wife of 57 years by his side. He was 80.

He was born May 10, 1937, at Lincoln, Neb., the son of Earl and Alma Norris Faust. Shortly thereafter, the family moved to Des Moines, Iowa, where he attended grade school, junior high, high school and Iowa State University. He was a member of the Iowa National Guard until he joined the U.S. Air Force.

Alfred Spencer

Died – Nov. 13, 2017

SCRANTON — Alfred R. “Boogie” Spencer Sr., Scranton, died Monday, Nov. 13, 2017, at home. He was 61.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Nov. 20 at Carbondale Church of Christian Fellowship, Carbondale.

Hazel Lou Rethorst Herron

June 11, 1925 – Nov. 9, 2017

SPEARVILLE — Hazel Lou Rethorst Herron went to be with the Lord Thursday, Nov. 9, 2017. She was 92

She was born on June 11, 1925, at Hutchinson, the daughter of Louis and Hazel Ott Rethorst. She attended school in Spearville, graduating from high school in 1943.

She attended college at Emporia, graduating in 1947 with a home economics degree. She taught for two years in Lyons.

She married Cecil Herron June 5, 1949. He preceded her in death.

Ida Jo Haag Swisher Jones

April 21, 1936 – Nov. 6, 2017

EMPORIA — Ida Jo Haag Swisher Jones died Monday, Nov. 6, 2017 at Presbyterian Manor, Emporia. She was 81.

She was born April 21, 1936, at Emporia, the daughter of Albert Joseph and Helen Rose Brown Haag. She attended elementary school at St. Joseph’s at Olpe and graduated from Reading High School with the class of 1953.
She married Lowell “Dean” Swisher Oct. 30, 1954, at Assumption Catholic Church, Reading. They were later divorced.

Virginia L. Getsinger

Aug. 19, 1928 – Nov. 8, 2017

OSAGE CITY — Virginia L. Getsinger, Burlingame, died Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2017, at an Osage City nursing home. She was 89.

She was born Aug. 19, 1928, at Perry, the daughter of Leo Michael and Laura Alice Collett Werner.

She married James Michael Getsinger Feb. 10, 1948, at Topeka. He preceded her in death on Feb. 9, 1995.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Joseph Michael Getsinger on Oct. 22, 1973.

Ruth Masters Whitaker

Oct. 24, 1944 – Oct. 19, 2017

TOPEKA — Ruth Masters Whitaker, Topeka, died Oct. 19, 2017. She was 72.

She was born Oct. 24, 1944 the daughter of Gilbert and Mary Masters.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Jennifer; and two brothers, Don and Mick.

She is survived by a son, Christopher; seven grandchildren; and three brothers, Terry, Gilbert(Bud) and Jim.

Charles McNelly

Died – Nov. 2, 2017

OSAGE CITY — Charles McNelly left Nov. 2, 2017, for an extended hunting and fishing trip. He was 89.

He was a veteran of WW II, Korean and Vietnam wars. He served in the U.S. Navy as a Seabee and the U.S. Army and Air Force. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Distinguished Service Cross and many other medals. He worked as a park ranger at Tuttle Creek and Pomona Lakes.

He enjoyed rodeos, dancing and spending time with his beloved wife, Chris McNelly, family and friends.

Ellis Swarts

May 11, 1922 – Nov. 2, 2017

OSAGE CITY — Ellis Swarts died Nov. 2, 2017, at Osage City. He was 95.

He was born May 11, 1922.

James Sosebee

Dec. 10, 1941 – Aug. 26, 2017

TOPEKA — James “Rock” Sosebee, Vassar, died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2017, at V.A. Medical Center, Topeka. He was 75.

He was born Dec. 10, 1941, at Beaufort, S.C., the son of James and Blanche Cobb Sosebee. He grew up in South Carolina and lived in North Carolina and Arizona before moving to Lake Pomona near Vassar in 1994.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1959 to 1963. He worked most of his life in construction as a steel worker. He was a member of the Tar Heel Stompers Motorcycle Club and then the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club.

Humbert Emil Rosetta

July 14, 1935 – Nov. 2, 2017

OSAGE CITY — Humbert Emil Rosetta passed away peacefully Nov. 2, 2017. He was 82.

He was born July 14, 1935, at Osage City, the son of Grace Bailey Rosetta and Humbert S. Rosetta. He lived his entire life in Osage City.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Osage City.

He married Darlene Sahlberg July 17, 1954. She survives of the home.
