Carbondale man injured in three-vehicle accident

Emergency personnel responded to an injury accident at 6:40 a.m. March 22 on U.S. 75 Highway and 189th Street, where a van collided with a semi trailer and a third vehicle.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, a 1999 Dodge 3500 Ram Van, driven by Michael C. Finton, 47, Carbondale, was traveling southbound and struck the back of a 2013 Kenworth semi truck and trailer, driven by Joshua Paul Riggles, 22, Mayetta, which had stopped to turn on to 189th Street.

The report said Finton did not observe the semi had stopped. The collision resulted in the secondary impact with a 2004 Chevy Venture, driven by Delbert L. Ramsey, 51, Lyndon, who was northbound on U.S. 75.

Finton was taken from the scene by air ambulance. Sources reported he was flown to Stormont Vail Healthcare, in Topeka, and later transported to University of Kansas Medical Center in Topeka. He is reported to be in stable condition.

Riggles and Ramsey were not injured in the accident. All three passengers were wearing seat belts.

The semi and van were removed from the scene by towing service; the Venture was removed from the scene by the owner.

Kansas Department of Transportation reported the highway was closed until around 8:30 a.m. Traffic was routed around the incident on gravel roads.

Responding agencies included the Kansas Highway Patrol, Osage County Sheriff's Office, Osage County Fire District No. 1 Carbondale, Osage County EMS and Lifestar Air Ambulance.
